It was an honor to serve on the Right to Read panel alongside the inspiring NAACP activist Kareem Weaver, CT State Treasurer Erick Russell, and Greater New Haven NAACP President Dr. Doris Dumas and facilitated by ConnCAN Executive Director Steven Hernández.📚✨

Our discussion delved into the systemic factors, both within and beyond schools, that perpetuate achievement gaps. We explored how schools, families, and community organizations can collaborate to enhance early language development and provide essential support to families.

As we confront the challenges in education today, prioritizing language and literacy development is crucial.

Together, we can cultivate a culture that values reading and learning, empowering our students to thrive and make meaningful contributions to their communities. Let’s continue to champion literacy as the key to a brighter tomorrow for all children!

What a day we had for the Truman School Walkathon! The weather was absolutely perfect, and the joy and community spirit were off the charts! Seeing all our students and families walking together was truly inspiring.

Thank you to everyone who made it such a fantastic time—the creative chalk painting outside and the high-energy fun during the games kept the joy going all day long!

Congratulations to the 2024 inductees of the Lee-Career High School Hall of Fame, whose plaques were unveiled yesterday, as well as to the 2026 inductees, announced to the public. John S. Martinez Sea & Sky STEM Magnet School hosted a Manufacturing Month event for 8th graders. Students participated in an interactive advanced manufacturing video game called Maker Mojo, created by Skillionaire, in partnership with Penn Globe/MATCH and skillsgapp.

Angelina Dusa, school counselor, coordinated the event with Marcia LaFemina and Tina Zwolinski to provide this hands-on learning experience for students. Ms. LaFemina is president and CEO of Penn Globe and board chair of MATCH, while Ms. Zwolinski is co-founder and CEO of skillsgapp.

Don’t just teach about eyes—let students investigate them! This module from Smithsonian Science, How Can Animals Use Their Senses to Communicate, explores how vision works and even how fiddler crabs use their eyes to survive.
Our 4th graders in Ms. Irizarry’s class at Truman School completed this activity, sparking curiosity and seeing science in a whole new light! #NHPS

Captain Troy Frost and members of the New Haven Fire Department visited Mauro- Sheridan School in honor of Fire Safety Month and monthly theme, Respect! #NHPS

Our 3rd graders in Ms. Pasan’s class at Truman School closed Hispanic Heritage Month with a beautiful reflection on love, respect, and belonging. Each student created a display about their country of origin, working proudly with their families to share traditions, foods, and stories that represent their roots. After presenting to their classmates, students discussed the similarities and differences between the many cultures represented in the classroom. Through these conversations, they came to a powerful understanding — that even though we may come from different places and traditions, we all belong to the same world and deserve to be treated with love and care.

Moments like these remind us how important it is to celebrate who we are, where we come from, and how much stronger we are when we learn to love and support one another.

First-grade students in Ms. Rosario's room at Truman School had an amazing time getting creative! They made colorful maracas inspired by the flags of different Hispanic countries, celebrating the vibrant cultures and traditions they represent.
But the fun didn’t stop there! They also explored Indigenous Spanish words by coloring the alphabet, learning new vocabulary while connecting with the rich history of Spanish-speaking communities.

It was wonderful to see their excitement and curiosity shine as they combined art, language, and culture in such a hands-on way. We’re so proud of their creativity and enthusiasm! #NHPS

This youth-powered marketplace will highlight the creativity and innovation of young entrepreneurs.
